A Community Effort to Preserve a Historic Church

In the heart of Marianna, Arkansas, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church has stood as an integral part of the community since its construction in 1921. Over the years, it has been a place for worship, celebration, community, and reflection. However, time had taken its toll, and the church's roof had deteriorated significantly, leaving this beloved structure in urgent need of repair.

For Matthew Bennett, vice president and general manager at Atlas Roofing Corporation, and a Lake Village, Arkansas native, the church was more than a historic building—it was a place woven into the fabric of his family's story. It was where he and his wife exchanged vows and all three of their children were baptized. So when Matthew's friend, Steve Higginbothom, senior warden at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and former Arkansas state representative, came to him about the roof’s condition, Bennett was determined to help.

A Plan Takes Shape

In March of 2024, Matthew reached out to Stan Bastek, vice president of sales and marketing at Atlas Roofing Corporation, to discuss how they could support the church. "St. Andrews needs a new roof, and I'd like to do as much as we can to minimize the material costs," he said.

Bennett shared photos of the church with Bastek, and together they worked with Eric Plowman, plant manager of the Atlas Roofing Plant in Meridian, MS, to review the best options. The team decided on a full Atlas Roofing System that would enhance the church's beauty—amplifying its stained-glass windows and classic design—while providing long-lasting protection.

With the materials secured, the church's local roofer, Chris Griffin, stepped in to lead the installation. Known for his expertise and commitment to quality, Griffin ensured that every detail of the project was handled with precision and care, preserving the building's historical integrity.

Coming Together for St. Andrew's

Today, St. Andrew’s stands with its new roof serving as both a shield against the elements and a symbol of enduring hope. For Bennett, the project carried a profound personal significance. "St. Andrews has given so much to this community and my family," he said. "This was our chance to give back in a way that truly honors its legacy."

The restoration was more than a new roof—it was a commitment to preserving the church's role in the community's history. Every shingle, nail, and moment of effort reflected a shared dedication to ensuring that St. Andrew's continues to welcome its congregation and remain a cherished part of Marianna for years to come.
